RSS-Feeds informieren über Änderungen auf Websites. Kurze Textanrisse leiten den Abonnenten zur gewünschten Website weiter. Um den kostenlosen Informationsdienst zu nutzen, reicht das Aktivieren des Feeds mittels Mausklick auf das Icon. Die Benachrichtigung erfolgt über ein Tabulatoren-Lesezeichen im Browser. Dort ist es jederzeit wieder per rechter Maustaste löschbar. Alternativ kann das RSS in iGoogle, der individuell zusammenstellbaren Startmaske von Google, integriert werden.
Sollte eine Website diesen Dienst nicht anbieten, besteht die Möglichkeit, Änderungen auf Sites mit Google Alert (Information per E-Mail) oder Google Reader (Information via Browser) zu verfolgen.
Im Gegensatz zum Newsletter bestimmt nicht der Website-Betreiber Frequenz und Umfang der Information, sondern ein Web-basierter Automatismus.
Ein RSS ermöglicht das konsequente Beobachten von Websites. Entwicklungen und Angebote der Branche, des Wettbewerbs und von Special-Interest-Seiten sind so jederzeit auf dem Radar. Im Sinne einer ersten Marktanalyse sollte diese Möglichkeit noch ergänzt werden um einen Google Alert.
